Members of the local government were joined by Congressman Sanford Bishop last Wednesday, as they came together to cut the ribbon on the city’s new wastewater treatment plant.

“As you know, this facility took a major step forward,” Mayor Edward Reynolds said, welcoming the crowd. “It sort of speaks to the investment cities make in infrastructure that this facility lasted as long as it did from the first time. We feel like we have done another great stewardship of our city tax dollars by the investment we made here in the expansion of the sewage treatment plant, for not only the sustainability, but for the future growth of our community.”

Following the mayor’s introduction, City Councilman Kregg Close delivered the invocation for the event.

After the invocation, Mayor Reynolds introduced Congressman Bishop, mentioning the funding Bishop has helped secure for the wastewater project, and describing him as an “active advocate for the rural communities, not only in projects like this, but in agriculture and in military support.”

Congressman Bishop began with his “morning affirmation,” stating “This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

“Water is fundamental to our communities, both for the health of our residents, as well as for the well-being of our economy,” he continued, “That’s why I fought directly to get the $1 million for this project, through our FY22 Federal Funding Bill.”

Bishop continued, talking about the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. “I’m happy to see work that I do in Congress for you making life better here at home in Southwest Georgia,” he said.

After speaking, all the officials gathered to cut the ribbon. Following the cutting, the facility staff gave a tour of the facility to the attendees.
