Bainbridge High School Bearcats basketball teams won all three of their scrimmage games at their Wednesday team camp at the school gymnasium.
The Bearcats’ junior varsity team opened tournament play with a 39-35 junior varsity victory over the Thomasville High School junior varsity Bulldogs.
The game-clinching basket came on a layup off the right glass by Jamez Harris. Greg Lee’s layup broke a 33-33 tie and put the Bearcats ahead to stay.
Other contributing factors to the young Bearcats’ victory were the guard play of B.J. Cheatem and the rebounding of Tim Shaw.
“I thought our young players did a good job overall,” Coach McCullough said after the game.
In varsity squad’s two games, the Bearcats defeated the Cairo High School Syrupmakers 53-16 and defeated the Thomasville High School Bulldogs 55-45.
Leading the way in the victory over the Syrupmakers was the shooting and rebounding of Rodney Glenn, Trey Kelly and Paul Chukes, as well as the guard play of Quincy Fortson.
The Bearcats jumped out to an early 6-0 lead over the Thomasville Bulldogs, but the Bulldogs outscored BHS 30-17 the rest of the half and walked off with a 30-23 intermission lead.
The Bearcats grabbed a 2-0 lead when Paul Chukes hit a jumper from the left side. He followed that up with a layup off the left glass to make it 4-0. Rodney Glenn then drove in for a layup off the right glass to complete the 6-0 run.
The second half also started with a Bearcats scoring run. They scored the first eight points to take a 31-30 lead. The points came on a pair of layups by Rodney Glenn and a pair of layups by Trey Kelly.
After the Bearcats’ final camp victory over the Bulldogs, Coach McCullough said he was pleased with the way things went.
“We played well and we got a chance to look at some young players,” he said.
Other teams taking part in the camp were the Early County High School Bobcats and the Cottondale, Florida High School Hornets.
The Bearcats will begin their 2011-2012 season in November.
