Saturday morning, the Firehouse Arts Center held a Sidewalk Chalk Competition. Ages 12 & under and 13 & up could participate in the event. Participants could compete individually or in a group. Afterwards, participants chose the square they wanted to draw in in front of the Firehouse Arts Center.
There was no particular theme to draw, but the image had to have criteria scores ranging from 1-5 in: First impression, Creativity & Originality, Technical, and Craftsmanship. Participants had three hours to finish their drawing, but some finished early. Each drawing was creative and unique.
Hannah Holley, Art Teacher at Bainbridge Middle School, Sharon Foulk from the Artists’ Alliance of Decatur County, and David Long, Mary Alice Long’s brother and a volunteer at the Firehouse Arts Center, were the judges there to determine the score. The highest score that participants could make was 20 points. There were many participants that had close scores, but Phoenix and Asa Adams were the 13 & up winners.
Phoenix and Asa drew a colorful sea life image that involved sea creatures like octopus, jellyfish, and sharks. Mary Alice of the Firehouse Arts Center joked that “it was a lot, and it was the brightest square with a lot of blue.” Jackson Pelletier was the 12 & under winner.
There was also a People’s Choice Winner that Phoenix and Asa won also. The winners received a sidewalk canvas art book and a $15 gift card to the Firehouse Arts Center.
Mary Alice stated that she “enjoyed watching everybody draw and everyday interacting and watching everyone else’s art. It was really fun, because like everybody gets started and then they wanna go look around and see what everyone else is doing so that makes it really fun.”
