The Mardi Gras Society of Southwest Georgia Corporation is a dedicated all-women non-profit group focused on aiding charities across Southwest Georgia. Their mission involves supporting these charities through financial contributions and non-monetary assistance, which are carefully vetted and approved by committees throughout the year.

The Mardi Gras Society’s fundraising approach is all about adding an element of fun to the community of Decatur County. They organize vibrant Mardi Gras events designed to raise funds for the various charities in the region.

“We have a care krewe that encourages and equips students pursuing extracurricular activities,” Sheryl Carrington, the former president from 2022-23 and 2023-24 for the Mari Gras Society said, “which will result in them being a better well-rounded human being. We can step in to help children achieve their extracurricular activities.”

Beyond fundraising, they prioritize fostering a sense of sisterhood among its members and celebrating the joyous moments together.

In essence, the Mardi Gras Society strives to combine community spirit, enjoyment, and charitable work to positively impact Southwest Georgia. Supporting local charities and continuing efforts in aiding those in need.

“Our goal has always been to maintain the product, that’s what our motives are, it’ll be maintained within the society itself,” Carrington said.

The 2025 Mambo Grand Slam Pickleball Tournament was held at the Bill Reynolds Tennis Center. Following the tournament, a free introductory pickleball clinic for children was conducted from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Pickleball is quite popular in Bainbridge, Georgia. The area boasts 22 dedicated pickleball courts spread across three main locations: Bill Reynolds Tennis & Pickleball Center, Bainbridge YMCA, and Potter Street Community Center. These courts offer both indoor and outdoor options.

“I think pickleball has taken a substantial increase so much that tennis has suffered from it,” Carrington said. “Pickleball has allowed people that don’t play tennis to enjoy sports socially.”

All proceeds go to the Mardi Gras Society of Southwest Georgia. Some of their notable events include: Rouxlin on the River: A festive event featuring food, music, and activities. Mambo Grand Slam Pickleball Tournament: A competitive pickleball tournament that brings the community together.  Run for the Beads 5K/Fun Run that begins this Thursday: A 5K run and fun run event with a Mardi Gras theme.

Let the Good Times Roll Golf Tournament which begins this Friday: A golf tournament aimed at raising funds for charity. PAWrade of Barkus: A parade featuring pets and their owners, celebrating the spirit of Mardi Gras. Fat Tuesday Flint River Mardi Gras Parade begins March 4th: A spectacular parade along the Flint River, ending in downtown Bainbridge with music, food, and family-friendly activities.

These events not only help raise funds for various non-profits but also promote community spirit and sisterhood among participants.

“We now have members in five different counties, in Southwest Georgia,” Carrington said. “We have put back into our communities a good bit through donations and supporting us.”
