Last Wednesday, Alicia Hurtt, owner of the Women’s Wellness Center, launched the Community Food Program to help fight food insecurity in Bainbridge.

With 20% of Bainbridge families struggling with food access, Hurtt, her family, and a team of dedicated volunteers came together to distribute food to those in need. The initiative provides essential resources and monthly webinars to educate families on nutrition and available support services.

Food distribution follows a first-come, first-served basis, with the following criteria:

  • One food package per household per address
  • Recipients must be 18 or older to pick up food
  • Valid ID or a piece of mail is required for verification

To ensure consistent food deliveries, Hurtt partnered with Second Harvest, with distributions occurring on the second and fourth Friday of every month. Since its inception, the Food Program has assisted 129 people, but Hurtt has set a bold goal of reaching 1,000 individuals and families.

Community support is essential to making this initiative sustainable. Monetary donations and pantry contributions will help stock necessary food items. Additionally, supporters can donate supplies such as folding chairs, zipper storage bags, safety traffic cones, folding tables, adjustable aprons, storage shelves, disposable gloves, take-out containers, cardboard boxes, Sharpies, “Thank You” bags, and refrigerators to aid operations.

Through compassion and collective action, Hurtt and her team are making significant strides toward eliminating food insecurity and creating a stronger, healthier community in Bainbridge.
