Cats dominate on the mat

David Kirkland’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats wrestling team defeated two fellow Region 1AAAA teams Tuesday at Hutto Middle School’s Bynes-Greenlee Gymnasium, capping strong three-day action.
Last Friday and Saturday, the team finished fourth in a strong 16-team field at the Westover High School Invitational in Albany.
In Tuesday’s match at Hutto, they defeated the Thomas County Central High School Yellow Jackets decisively and downed the defending Region 1AAAA champion Lee County High School Trojans in a close one.
Leading the way for the Bearcats against Central Tuesday were Martin Dollar in the 119-pound weight division, Hunter Bulger in the 140-pound weight division, Michael Dobbs in the 152-pound weight division and Ben Reynolds in the 285-pound heavyweight division, who all won by pin.
The Bearcats, who had their first win over Lee County Dec. 2 in Leesburg, beat them in a tie breaker Tuesday.
The Bearcats and Trojans tied in regulation time, but the Bearcats had more wins by pin, giving them the victory.
Turning in outstanding performances for the Bearcats in their victory over the Trojans were Dollar in the 119-pound weight division, Marc Fleetwood in the 125-pound weight division, Brandon Griffin in the 130-pound weight division, Kyle McMillian in the 160-pound weight division, Lawrence Jones in the 215-pound weight division and Reynolds in the 285-pound weight division.
Five Bearcat wrestlers captured medals at the Westover Invitational in Albany.
Miguel Hermosillo was third in the 285-pound weight division, Brock Merchant was second in the 160-pound weight division, Kevin Hill was third in the 171-pound weight division, Bulger was third in the 140-pound weight division and Gustavo Estala was third in the 145-pound weight division.
