Gertrude Jakes

Funeral services for Gertrude Emanuel Jakes, 87, of Valdosta, Ga., formerly of Decatur County, was held on Tuesday, March 24, at Emanuel Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. John Thomas Sr. and T.C. Smith officiating.

Interment followed at Pine Grove Burial Society Cemetery in Bainbridge with Larry J. Ware, Alfred J. Green, Bennie E. Ware III, Bennie Jakes, James M. Ware and Edward L. Akins serving as active pallbearers.

Stewards of St. Luke Independent Methodist Church served as honorary pallbearers.

Born in Decatur County on Aug. 2, 1921, Mrs. Jakes died on March 20, 2009, at her daughter’s residence in Valdosta, Ga. She was a retired domestic engineer, and she was a member of the St. Luke Independent Methodist Church in Faceville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Stewart Jakes; and a son, Adam Steward Jakes.

She is survived by her daughter, Dora Jakes Robinson of Valdosta; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and one aunt.

Chandler’s Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of funeral services.
