Funeral services for Janie Phillips Sheffield, 83, of 1447 Whites Bridge Road, Colquitt, Ga., were held Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, at Eldorendo Baptist Church in Decatur County with the Rev. Tommy Long officiating.
Interment followed in the church cemetery with Philip Keaton, Joe Chesnut, Paul Maxwell, Richard Maxwell, Glen Smith and Jay Standridge serving as active pallbearers.
Mrs. Sheffield, who died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, at her residence was the daughter of Dewey Wilson Phillips and Ella Alston Phillips. She attended Miller County schools and married her high school sweetheart, Hitlon Sheffield, on Sept. 19, 1944. He preceded her in death in 2004.
She began her working career as a riveter at the Bainbridge Air Base during World War II and ended her career at ITT Thompson Industries. Other employment included Williamson-Dickies, Jack Winters and Donnie Mills. She was member of Eldorendo Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She was a member of Blakely Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star 282, and was a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Cappie Chapter 115.
Survivors include her children: Allan Sheffield and Sharon Day, both of Bainbridge, and Bettye Keaton of Leesburg; siblings, Loraine Blackmon of Mobile, Ala., Gene Phillips of Bainbridge and JoAn Standridge of Winder, Ga., three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and other relatives. A granddaughter, Jamie Denise Day, died in 2000.
