It was a great season for Southwest Georgia high school track teams.
The highlight locally was coach Larry Cosby’s Bainbridge High School Bearcats winning the state Class AAAA championship.
There was also another Southwest Georgia state championship team that was coached by Ben Willis, who was an assistant football and track coach with the Bearcats.
Willis’ Pelham High School Hornets won the State Class A track championship. The Hornets’ top-point producer was Lester Moore, who clinched the championship with a victory in the 200-meter dash.
Willis, an assistant for the Bearcats track team under long-time highly successful coach Larry Clark, coached receivers for former Bearcats head football coach Greg Guy.
“It was just awesome,” Willis, who is in his second year as Hornets head coach, said when recently commenting on his team’s state championship. There hasn’t been a lot of winning at Pelham, so the state championship means even more.
“I can’t say enough about the team. They did everything they had to do,” Willis said.
Willis’ Hornets led the entire meet and finished with 68 points. Eagles Landing High School was second with 56 points and Athens Christian School was third with 55 points.
