Bainbridge Lions Club members learned about the healing qualities of Camp H.E.A.L on Wednesday.

Anna Brinson, bereavement coordinator at Hospice of Southwest Georgia, which sponsors the one day camp for 6-to-13-year-old youngsters who have lost a loved one, told the Lions it will be held Saturday, June 12 at Bainbridge College’s Continuing Education Center.

She explained that H.E.A.L stands for Healing and Encouragement After Loss.

Ms. Brinson talked about the activities that take place during the campers day.

Campers begin arriving around 8 a.m. and activities begin at 9 a.m.,” she said. “We have art therapy, music therapy and what we call memory box therapy.

In their memory boxes, youngsters put messages to their deceased loved ones,

“In general, the camp allows children to share their experiences and form new friendships.

“Children will also have the opportunity to learn more about grief while receiving bereavement support from trained professionals and hospice volunteers in a safe environment.

“The loss of a loved one can be especially difficult for children. One of the highlights of camp is the memorial service when campers present special tributes dedicated to their deceased loved ones. “We also have water sliding and horseback riding.”
