A masked man robbed the Kangaroo convenience store on U.S. 84 East early Tuesday morning, according to Bainbridge Public Safety.

The robbery happened shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday at the Kangaroo store located at 2011 E. Shotwell St. A man surprised the store’s clerk, demanded money from the cash register and fled on foot after taking it.

The suspect, who used what appeared to be a sawed-off shotgun to threaten the store’s clerk, wore a grey hooded sweatshirt, jeans and cotton gloves. The robber wore sunglasses, a blue bandanna covering his face and had a dirty white plastic bag with grease on it which he used to collect the money.

A witness saw the robber run north on the road toward the railroad track.

BPS officers believe the robber’s getaway vehicle was a Nissan pickup truck found wrecked on Black Jack Road a short time after the robbery. The truck hit a road sign and then collided with some trees before overturning. Officers found a blue bandanna stained with blood at the accident.

Anyone who knows more information about who may have committed the robbery is asked to call BPS at 248-3038 or the Sheriff’s Office at 248-3044. Tips can be made anonymously. Anyone who sees suspicious activity around a store or place of business should call 911.

Total reward money of more than $7,000 is being offered for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of any suspects in armed robberies occurring within the past year.

Of the 13 robberies of businesses in Decatur County during 2009, not including one attempted armed robbery, one has been solved, suspects have been charged in three other incidents and nine are unsolved.

BPS and the Sheriff’s Office are also continuing to look into who might have been responsible for two earlier robberies: July 20, 2001 at The Winery on Louise Street, and the Oct. 15, 2008 robbery of the Inland Food Mart on West Shotwell Street. Robbers shot and killed store employees in both of those incidents.
