Scripture: Isaiah 7:14; 9:1-7

Aim: To present the virgin birth of Jesus Christ into human society.

Golden Text: “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).

Those who believe Jesus Christ is a mere man reject His “virgin birth.” Those who would be critics of the Holy Scriptures rather than careful expositors of truth seek to discredit and nullify any suggestion that Jesus Christ is the Divine Son of God. Why? There may be many reasons, but the main one is that they want to nullify the claims of Jehovah God upon their lives. They simply refuse to believe. This is nothing new. Men are still doing the same thing today. They deny the truth in order, in their minds, to be free from personal accountability to the Eternal God. In this they fail!

The fact that Jesus Christ came into this world should put every person on notice that each individual is responsible to God for himself. No matter what one does to seek to destroy, divert or deny that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh, he remains absolutely responsible to Him for his total being, and he will give an accounting to Jesus Christ for his own life. There are no exceptions!

I. The Divine promise was that Jesus Christ (The divine, eternal Son of God) would be born into this world through a “virgin” (Isaiah 7:14). This means that a baby born to a virgin woman would be the Son of God. Thus, He would be the God-Man. The text says that a virgin would conceive and bear a son who is “Immanuel,” which means “God with us.” A baby would be born to a virgin woman who had been impregnated by God the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20-23). This baby’s name, “Jesus,” means, “Jehovah is Salvation.” He is the “Christ,” the Anointed One.”

This means that the baby born to Mary, wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger, is the Eternal God who is with man always. He is the Savior of all mankind. He is anointed by the Heavenly Father to be Who He is, and to do what He does. He is the Savior for all mankind!

II. The expectation of the coming of Jesus Christ is the means of great blessings to man (Isaiah 9:1-5). In verse two there is the expression of “hope”! The birth of Jesus Christ brings great hope to the hearts of men. In verse three, great “joy” is brought to the hearts of men.

At the coming of Christ they were filled, and are still filled, with great joy. The hope and joy resulted in a great “deliverance” for all those who will put their trust in the Savior (vs. four). In these, the shadow of death is removed, the joyous victory is realized, and the cause is the great deliverance from sin and eternal separation from God has been effected for all who believe on Christ.

III. The coming of the Blessed God and our Savior Jesus Christ was promised (Isaiah 9:6-7). Here we learn that “a child is born” (vs. 6). This Child is the Son of God and of Mary. He is a human child!

Secondly, a “Son is given” (vs. 6). “For God so loved the world that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him shall have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

Thirdly, “the government shall be upon His shoulder” (vs. 6). Jesus Christ is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. He shall rule for eternity!

His character is given. He is the “Wonderful Counselor.” He is able to give accurate direction because He is the “Mighty God.” He is the “Everlasting Father (Father and Son are one). He is the “Prince of Peace.” He gives His peace to all who will receive Him, and He will someday give peace to all who have put their faith in Him for all of eternity to come. He will rule over His kingdom forever (vs. 7). It will be ruled in absolute judgment, according to truth and justice (vs. 7). The “zeal of the Lord of Hosts will perform this”!
