The win improved the Bearcats’ season record to 14-2. They traveled to Cuthbert last night for a game against the Randolph-Clay High School Red Devils.
They will host the Lincoln High School Trojans from Tallahassee, Fla., on Friday at 6 p.m. and will host the Cairo High School Syrupmakers Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
With the game tied 48-48, Shawn Samuels drove in for a layup off the left glass to start the run and put the Bearcats ahead to stay 50-48.
Another layup by Samuels, this one at the 3:02 mark, made it 52-48 and a free throw by Adam Taylor at the 1:44 mark made it 53-48.
The lead quickly moved out to nine, at 57-48, when Devon Baulkman converted a jumper and free throw at the 1:35 mark, and Samuels hit another layup off the left glass at the 1:13 mark.
The Hornets countered with a hook shot in the lane by Mygail Hill at the 1:01 mark to cut it to 57-50.
Baulkman, who took game high-scoring honors with 22 points, hit a driving shot in the lane and two free throws at the 43- and 31-second marks to push the advantage out to 61-50.
The Hornets’ Darius Thomas hit a three-point jumper from the left side to cut it to 61-53 before Baulkman completed the scoring with a layup off the left glass at the 13-second mark.
After the game, Bearcats coach Rickey McCullough said he thought his team came through in the clutch against a very good Pelham team.
Trea Kelly joined Baulkman in the double-figure scoring column with 10 points. He was followed by Samuels with nine and Rodney Glenn with eight.
