Taliyah Ausgood shines as BHS Ladycats play in FSU tournament

The Ladycats finished 3-1 at a Basketball tournament in Tallahassee over the weekend.

The team played Friday and Saturday in the Brooke Wyckoff basketball camp hosted at Florida State University. Head Coach Danny Evans said he was pleased with the team’s effort on the court.

“The girls fought really, really hard,” Evans said. “They know now that they can win.”

Evans said point guard Taliyah Ausgood’s performance over the weekend impressed him. He praised her playmaking and passing ability during the tournament and highlighted a minute-and-a-half standoff she had at the end of a game to eke out a win.

“She got rave reviews the whole camp,” Evans said. “She’s a true point guard,… a playmaker.”

The team won its first game by double digits. Ausgood controlled the match’s tempo and said she felt “real good” after the win.

Evans considers her one of the leaders on the team, along with shooting guard Miyah Williams. Williams also played a role in the first game’s victory.

“I hit a few threes or whatever,” Williams said nonchalantly.

The Ladycats won their next game against Bishop Kenny High School by double digits. Bishop Kenny is last year’s 4a Florida state championship runners-up.

The girls lost their third game against Westside Macon High School. Evans said the team struggled in all phases of play during the game but bounced back for their last match.

The Ladycats came back from an eight-point deficit to win in their final game against Eastside High School from Gainesville, FL. The team went down eight at the end of the first quarter, but that didn’t worry Evans.

“[The players] know they have the talent and that they can come back from any deficit,” Evans said.

Evans told the girls to embrace the challenge and to keep fighting. They did and won the game by one point.

Up next for the Ladycats is a double-header in Albany Tuesday.
