All signs are looking good for the agriculture industry in Decatur County this year.

Crop prices for cotton and corn seem to be about the same high prices they were for last year, according to Mitchell May, coordinator at the Decatur County University of Georgia county extension office.

“We basically ran out of peanuts in 2011 and so we’re in a short supply, so peanut prices will be very good for this year,” May said.

The fact that Decatur County is 70-percent irrigated crops will help to mean a good year for the industry, which is the biggest industry in the county.

“I’m positive in terms on returns for crops for this year, I’ve got a positive outlook and I think most farmers do, as far as profitability for most crops that are going to be grown in Decatur County,” May said.

After reaching historic highs last year, cattle prices will continue to be profitable. The biggest concern facing beef producers is the price of feed, May said.
