The Lady Cougars finished the regular season 19-9, with the final win against Sherwood Christian Academy.
The team maintained momentum in their 3-0 victory, according to head coach Kelsey Harrell.
“We started out strong, and we finished strong,” Harrell said. “We never let [Sherwood] take it.”
The Lady Cougars won the first two sets by more than ten points with scores of 25-14 and 25-13. Just three points decided the final set, but the team won with a 25-23 third set.
“It’s always good to beat Sherwood in three sets,” Harrell said,
The Lady Cougars succeeded tonight despite one of its best players being less than 100%. Junior outside hitter and co-captain Kate Poitevint injured her knee during a region tournament game Saturday.
Poitevint played Tuesday’s match against Sherwood, but Harrell gave her strict instruction not to dive for any balls to avoid aggravating the injury. Poitevint only played on the front row and was subbed out when she rotated to the back row.
Because of the complication, Harrell had to run an altered lineup and game plan.
“I was kind of nervous coming into this game because I didn’t know how the team was going to respond to the [Poitevint] situation,” Harrell said. “There were several players that I would say that this was their best game yet… There’s nothing I would have changed about that game.”
The Lady Cougars look ahead to playoffs with the win against Sherwood behind them. The first and second rounds of playoffs will be Tuesday, Oct. 3.
Harrell said she is focusing on strengthening the team’s defense, patching up weak spots and simulating in-game scenarios to prepare her team for the upcoming elevated level of play.
Details for the Tuesday matches are still to be announced. Harrell said the team should know by the end of the weekend.
