UPDATE: Following the release of this article, it was made official that Danimer Scientific has filed for bankruptcy.
According to an official WARN notice filing, Danimer Scientific will be officially ceasing its operations at its Bainbridge facilities. These closures will result in the layoffs of 82 employees, which began on Friday, March 14. According to the filing, the closure has resulted from Danimer suffering “an unprecedented shortage of liquidity, and that the Company’s cash position is critically low, which has resulted in the Company failing to make certain payments on its existing debt obligations and has inhibited the Company’s ability to continue as a going concern.”
The filing stated that Danimer received some short-term financing in December of 2024, with the goal of providing time to seek a third-party purchasers.
“Since then, the Company has aggressively marketed itself to potential institutional investors and strategic buyers and explored numerous different transaction structures, including direct investments in the Company,” it continued.
“The Company believed that issuing this notice at an earlier date would have interfered with these efforts as well as jeopardized the necessary support of key current and potential future customers, which has always been critical to the Company’s capital raise efforts.”
Danimer would only receive indication of one interested investor, on the condition of Danimer supplying their cutlery products to one of their proposed customers, a quick service restaurant chain. However, these efforts ultimately failed.
“All of this has made it impossible to secure going-concern funding from the Company’s lenders or from the only third-party investor the Company was able to identify after months of effort.”
According to the filing, the closures are expected to be permanent.
